Virtual Tour

As you drive up Buck’s Rock Road and into camp, the first building you may see is the Weaving Shop up in the woods on your left. The first building you will see on your right is the Actors’ Studio.

The first driveway to your left leads you to the Office and Dining Hall. The Porch of the historic Dining Hall and camp office is the “central square” of Buck’s Rock. You can peek into the Dining Hall to see where we eat all of our meals and host some Evening Activities such as game nights and some movie nights. You’ll also notice the Canteen, our on-campus store for buying snacks and sometimes fun Buck’s Rock merchandise!

As you walk around the Dining Room Porch you will see the Gong, which is the heartbeat of Buck’s Rock. Originally a reclaimed railroad tire, the Gong tells us when to wake up, when to eat, when the Shops open, when the Evening Activities start and when it is time to go to bed.

Behind the Gong, you will see a small path leading to the Leather Shop. Beyond this shop are the studios for Computer, Video, and Puppetry. This quiet area of shops is home to some incredible projects, ranging from computer games made by campers to full on puppet shows!

Walking past the gong, you’ll reach “Downtown Shops”, where you’ll find most of our visual arts shops. First you’ll pass Flameworking, then onto Woodshop, Glassblowing, Ceramics, Sculpture, Culinary, and Metals! This area of camp is always abuzz with activity, like the sound of saws coming from the Woodshop, the gentle whir of wheels in Ceramics, and the clang of jewelry hammers from Metals.

To the left of the Sculpture Shop is a path leading down to our Painting Shop where campers learn to use oils, pastels, acrylic, water colors and various other medium.

Opposite the Sculpture Shop is the Pub Shop, short for Publications. Pub is adorned with several of our yearly mural projects. In Pub, campers can learn Graphic Design, Creative Writing, how to write a Zine, and we produce our own yearbook every year in house. Attached to the Pub Shop is our Digital Photography Shop. Campers can learn how to shoot manually using a DSLR or how to manipulate images using PhotoShop.

Heading up the small hill from Photo is our Sewing Shop where campers can make shirts and dresses, bags and pillows, blankets and pajamas. Connected to Sewing is our Batik Shop which is a beautiful process of wax-resistant dyeing on cloth.

Across from Sewing is Book Arts where campers can learn letterpress, paper making, and book binding. Up the hill between Sewing and Book Arts is Weaving, where campers work on looms weaving everything from a friendship bracelet to a blanket or tapestry that could take a camper an entire session to complete.

Behind Book Arts and across Buck’s Rock Road is the Actors’ Studio which is our small theater where we produce some of our plays, concerts, comedy shows and art galleries.

If you now turn left and head north on Buck’s Rock Road, you will see the Infirmary on your left which is above the Ceramics Shop. We have two full time nurses on staff and New Milford Hospital is only three miles away.

On your right you will see the Music Shed aka Mushed. Here we provide private lessons in almost every instrument and practice our Orchestra, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Pit Band, and numerous Rock Bands.

Past the Mushed on the same side of the road is P.A.S.S. which stands for Printmaking and Silk Screen where campers can design their own T-shirts and posters or create images with various printmaking formats such as linoleum or wood cuts.

Behind P.A.S.S. is our Radio Station WBBC (Bulova Broadcasting Company) where campers can host their own radio show or learn how to be a DJ.

On the left is the Pavilion, one of our many multi-purpose gathering and performance spaces, where we teach Fencing, Martial Arts, Tai Chi, Yoga and Table Tennis. We also have our Rock Cafés, Puppet Shows, movie nights, and other performances here as well.

Back on the right side of the road is the Voice and Piano shed where campers can have private lessons, in conjunction with counselors from Mushed.

On the left side of the road where it begins to turn is our Dance Studio. Here, campers can learn modern, tap, hip-hop, ballet, jazz and more as well as participate in our two dance performances every summer.

Across the road from the Dance Studio is our Clown Shop, but don’t look for any red noses or big feet. Our Clown Shop specializes in Stand-up, Improv and Sketch Comedy and many of our alums have gone on to professional careers in the business.

Behind the Clown Shop is our Drum Shed where campers can bank on our drum set all day. And behind the Drum Shed is Studio 59, our recording studio where campers can lay down some tracks solo or with their band and take their recordings home with them at the end of the summer.

Even though we are an arts camp, we have many sports and get plenty of exercise. Next to Studio 59 is our Basketball Court and our Tennis Courts. Campers can take tennis lessons three times a week or play pick up games in many of our sports at least two times a day.

If you continue up Buck’s Rock Road, you will start to see our Greenhouse and Garden on your right. Up on the hill, you will see our fruit tree orchard which has plenty of peach, pear, apple, Bing cherry, and Raineer cherry trees. In front of the fruit trees are our blueberry, blackberry, and raspberry bushes. In the ground, we always have corn, potatoes, lettuces and melons. And in our raised beds in our greenhouse, we have Sun Gold and heirloom tomatoes, squash, beets, carrots, peas, radishes, herbs and spices which we harvest for use in our Culinary Shop.

Further up Buck’s Rock Road on the left is our Farm. Year round we have four sheep, several goats, two pygmy goats, chickens, ducks, rabbits and a Sicilian Donkey named Gino. During the summer, the pen in the back right of the farm also houses two baby pigs. Campers can “adopt” an animal for the summer, name it and take responsibility for feeding and caring for it, but they don’t have to take it home. Look past the farm house across from the sheep barn for the steps leading down to the cow pasture.

Cross through the cow pasture and over the bridge to reach our Athletic Field and Swimming Pool. Here, campers play soccer, ultimate Frisbee, and softball in our weekly Watermelon League.

There is always something going on somewhere on camp—come find the things you love!
