Theatre
With our camp’s outdoor theater and black box performance space, we have more stars at our shows than Broadway.
The Theatre department at Buck's Rock encourages the growth and development of campers, both as performers and as people. As a summer acting and theater camp, campers and CITs are given the opportunity to audition for any of our plays and musicals. With a myriad of roles available, there is a space for any aspiring young performers!
Auditions happen the first day of camp, but they are extremely low-stress. Campers do not have to prepare anything in advance. They are given a few pages of the scripts for the summer, assigned a scene partner, and have time to practice before they audition in front of our four directors. Our CITs help them learn the lines, teach a dance for the musical, and help them pick a song to sing. After auditions, cast lists are posted the next morning, and from there rehearsals are scheduled every day! Campers check the bulletin board every morning to see the rehearsal schedule, and they are expected to show up when called. Rehearsals consist of scene work with the directors, blocking, projection exercises, improv games, character work, and so much more! Campers build their acting skills and learn how to perform in front of a large group. Everyone works together to prepare for the performance of a lifetime!
The nights before a performance, campers have tech rehearsal and then dress rehearsal, learning how a professional theater production would work. These nights are the best times for bonding - the cast, crew, and staff work together to bring the production all together before it is staged for the entire camp!
As well as acting, we encourage campers to try their hand at any other field of theater they might show interest in, such as design, stage management, or technical work, much of which is in done conjunction with the Set Design Shop, Costume Shop and Lighting and Sound Design, (or, as we call it, LSD).
